- Course Description
Monsters are fairytale phantoms that exist at the edges of society; often creatures of “the night,” they are seen as terrifying, abnormal, and villainous. As the ultimate “Others,” monsters guard the boundaries of what it means to be human. In this class, we will discuss how the figure of the monster has become an integral part of the American psyche that uses the figure to protect against and justify persecution of societal deviance. Through an examination of gender and its intersections, this course will introduce students to the growing field of Monster Theory. As an interdisciplinary enterprise, we will draw on a wide range of sources to understand how the monster functions in society.
