About Corey Tatz

Corey hails from Lawrenceville, GA which is a suburb of Atlanta.  In 2022, he completed his Master's of Gender Studies degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Canada. Along with the PhD, Corey is also pursuing a graduate certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health from the School of Public Health here at IU.

Corey’s dissertation project is titled, "A Longitudinal Study of Sexual Behavior and Identity among College-Aged Bi+ Bros”. He is following bi+ men who are part of bro culture (social fraternities, sport teams, ROTC, etc.) across a six-to-sixteen-month period. He is interested in their positionality and standings within their specified organizations, as well as the ways their sexual identity changes or remains static over time. Corey observes the ways in which their sexuality, and for some their clandestine behavior, affect their experiences within these organizations. He will also analyze the ways in which bi+ men navigate dating both men and women, as well as hookup culture. Most importantly, Corey hopes to tell these bi+ bros’ stories, their collective lived experiences, and have a glimpse into their lives, since bi erasure often overshadows the stories of these men.

Corey also has a great love for competition-style reality tv which he considers his second major area of interest. In the Fall of 2025, he taught a self-designed Survivor themed course that focused on different social issues through a historical and intersectional lens. He is specifically interested in how marginalized groups are represented on both Survivor and Big Brother. He centers his pedagogy and research around the 2020–2025 CBS diversity initiative, which required non-scripted shows to cast 50% BIPOC contestants, and how this has changed the landscape of both shows, making them more equitable.
